What Do Sleep Disorders Feel Like?

Sleep disorders often go undetected because their symptoms are mistaken for stress, aging, or lifestyle issues. If you wake up feeling fatigued, have difficulty concentrating, or experience irritability throughout the day, your body may not be receiving the deep, restorative sleep it needs.

In many cases, the root issue is a form of sleep apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which affects an estimated 2 to 4% of the population, is often caused by excess tissue in the throat or obesity, both of which can block airflow during sleep. Another form of sleep apnea, called Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), occurs when the brain does not send proper signals to breathe. CSA can sometimes be misdiagnosed as OSA, making accurate sleep testing even more important.

Sleep issues can also show up as:

  • Snoring or gasping during sleep
  • Frequent waking throughout the night
  • Morning headaches
  • Mood swings or anxiety
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Daytime fatigue, even after a whole night’s sleep

We offer sleep testing to help uncover the actual cause of your sleep struggles. Whether you’re dealing with OSA, CSA, insomnia, or another issue, proper testing is the first step toward restoring restful sleep and improving your health.

How We Use Sleep Testing to Improve Your Health

Sleep problems can do more than leave you tired. They may affect your immune system, heart, hormones, metabolism, and focus. Our sleep testing looks deeper than symptoms to find what’s disrupting your rest and recovery.

A traditional sleep study is performed in a sleep lab, where the test is conducted with you attached to numerous wires while sleeping in an unfamiliar environment. At The Woodlands Institute for Health and Wellness, we offer an at-home sleep study in the comfort of your own bed. This simple test involves wearing a pulse oximeter (just one sensor) on your finger overnight. It monitors your oxygen levels and heart rate throughout the night to evaluate whether low oxygen is contributing to symptoms such as:

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Snoring
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Morning grogginess
  • Brain fog
  • Delayed reaction times
  • Personality changes
  • Memory loss
  • Cardiac dysrhythmias
  • And other chronic symptoms

If oxygen desaturation is detected, we may recommend a follow-up study using nighttime oxygen (via nasal cannula) to monitor improvements and response to therapy. In addition to evaluating for sleep apnea, our sleep testing may include assessments for cortisol and melatonin levels, thyroid function, nutrient deficiencies, inflammation markers, and food sensitivities. These underlying issues can interfere with restorative sleep and overall health.

Simple treatments may include oxygen support, targeted supplements, nutrition and lifestyle adjustments, and stress reduction techniques—all tailored to your needs. With this kind of support, many of our patients sleep more deeply, wake up refreshed, and feel better throughout the day.
