Peptides Explained: What They Are, What They Aren’t & What to Know

By Mila McManus, MD
An explanation of peptides, what they are, what they are not and what you need to know before you use them.

You may have noticed that peptides are suddenly everywhere. They’re being discussed in conversations about healthy aging, metabolism, body composition, recovery, and overall wellness.

But what exactly are peptides? How do they work? And should we believe everything we hear about them?

At The Woodlands Institute for Health and Wellness, we believe understanding the why behind an approach is just as important as understanding the approach itself. So let’s take a closer look.

What Are Peptides?

Peptides are small proteins, meaning they are short chains of amino acids, whereas proteins are long strings of amino acids.

Your body naturally produces thousands of different peptides, and they play important roles throughout the body. One of their primary jobs is communication. Peptides can act as messengers, sending signals that tell cells and tissues how to respond.

Depending on the particular peptide, these signals may influence metabolism, appetite, tissue repair, immune function, sleep, recovery, and other normal biological processes.

Think of peptides as messengers helping the body communicate with itself, and helping the body speed up its actions, such as healing, building muscle, and cognitive function, depending on the peptide in question.

How Do Peptides Work?

Many peptides work by attaching to specific receptors on or within cells. When that connection occurs, it can trigger a series of biological responses.

This is part of what makes peptides so interesting. Rather than simply providing the body with a substance it needs, certain peptides can influence how the body communicates, regulates, and responds.

But there is an important distinction: peptides are not all alike.

Different peptides have different targets, effects, and levels of scientific evidence behind them. What is true about one peptide may not be true about another.

Are Peptides Natural?

Your body naturally produces many peptides, but that doesn’t mean every peptide product is “natural.”

Some peptide-based compounds are designed or manufactured to mimic, enhance, or otherwise influence biological signals. Some have been developed as FDA-approved medications for specific medical conditions, while others remain under investigation.

So the word peptide doesn’t automatically mean natural, safe, or proven.

A Word of Caution About Buying Peptides Online

With peptides becoming increasingly popular, you may find websites selling them directly to consumers—sometimes accompanied by impressive claims.

This is an area where we encourage extra caution.

Products purchased from unverified or unlicensed sources may not have the same quality controls, purity, potency, or safety standards as products obtained through appropriate medical and pharmacy channels. Products sold online may contain the wrong amount of an ingredient, different ingredients than expected, or contaminants. Moreover, greater than 90% of peptides are coming from China.

The concern is even greater when a product is intended to be injected. The FDA has warned about products marketed online as “research use only” that are nevertheless being promoted for human use. A “research use only” label does not necessarily make a product safe for human use.

When it comes to something you’re putting into your body, a great price or an impressive website isn’t enough. Having medical guidance from trained practitioners is paramount.  For example, one must consider the benefits vs risks regarding one’s own health issues and goals, as well as other medications and supplements being taken.

For What Conditions Are Peptides Being Studied?

Peptide research is a rapidly developing area of medicine. Depending on the particular peptide, researchers are exploring potential applications related to:

  • Metabolic health
  • Energy and mitochondrial health
  • Body composition
  • Healthy aging
  • Tissue repair and recovery
  • Sleep and restoration
  • Immune regulation
  • Hair growth
  • Exercise recovery
  • Cognitive and neurological health

Some areas have substantial clinical evidence, while others are still early in the research process. That’s an important distinction when making decisions about your health.

What Peptides Are NOT

With all the excitement surrounding peptides, it’s easy for the marketing to get ahead of the science.

Peptides are not a magic solution for all that ails a person. They aren’t simply another type of vitamin or supplement. And “peptide” is not a guarantee of safety or effectiveness.  As with any biologically active therapy, the details matter.
