Gut And Psychology Syndrome

Book Authored by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride

Pioneered by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, GAPS or Gut and Psychology Syndrome is a dietary protocol to address your gut health and it’s helping people overcome various health conditions—from mood disorders to skin rashes and autoimmune diseases.

So what exactly is GAPS? GAPS connects your physical and mental health with food, drinks and the condition of your digestive system. How so? There is beneficial bacteria that should exist in your gut to:

  • prevent the invasion of pathogenic (disease-causing) microbes,
  • produce important vitamins, nutrients and protective neutralizing substances and
  • help digest and absorb your food.

However, antibiotics, personal care products and even certain foods can destroy that microbial layer in your gut. Without that protection, you can experience inflammation in the GI tract as well as the absorption of toxins, disease-causing viruses, bacteria and parasites. This harmful situation that so many people unknowingly bring on themselves also allows partially digested food particles to be absorbed into your bloodstream prematurely, causing food allergies and food intolerances.

Other symptoms caused by this condition, sometimes called a “leaky gut,” include:

  • difficulty maintaining a healthy weight
  • learning disabilities
  • autism
  • ADD/ADHD
  • allergies
  • migraines
  • arthritis
  • bowel disorders (e.g. IBS) and more.

How can you turn this harmful situation around? The only certified GAPS practitioners in greater Houston are proud to work at The Woodlands Institute. After meeting with you to learn your health concerns, we’ll begin by determining if the GAPS diet is right for you. A yeast cleanse may be recommended first since it’s a similar, yet less aggressive protocol to restore the microbial foundation needed in your gut. If more attention is needed, The Woodlands Institute will guide you through an educational process of understanding your body’s real needs. For instance, despite the myths, a high intake of animal fats provides the building blocks to heal the gut and restore healthy tissues.

To learn more about the GAPS diet and its health benefits, check out this short video of our nutritional consultant Nancy Mehlert. One of our patients was so thrilled with the health results of being on the GAPS diet under the direction of The Woodlands Institute that she’s sharing her testimonial.
