Another Amazing Patient Testimonial

Another Amazing Patient Testimonial

For several years, I’d been experiencing increasingly severe auto-immune symptoms: I have had Raynaud’s syndrome for years, but it was worse than ever, I broke out in hives for seemingly no reason (there was a period of two weeks when I could only eat white rice and drink water, because anything else made me break out), I was constantly exhausted, and my migraines were getting more and more frequent. Every doctor I went to in Houston – supposedly some of the best rheumatologists, gastro-intestinal specialists, and endocrinologists in the world – looked at lab tests they performed on me, told me my blood tests were fine, and sent me home.

I was at my wit’s end. I was in grad school, and my parents and I were seriously discussing whether I would be able to hold down a job after graduation (and whether I was going to be able to graduate, which I thankfully did, partly because of my professors’ generosity and understanding). While searching the internet, I found Dr. McManus’s information, and decided to make an appointment. When I told my OB-GYN, she looked at me skeptically and warned me against going to “quacks.” (She was one of the many doctors who told me my blood tests were fine and implied that it was all in my head. She’s no longer my OB-GYN, of course).

I met with one of Dr. McManus’s providers who immediately diagnosed me with a candida infection. I’d heard of candida infections (essentially, a fungal infection of the gut, typically the result of over-use of antibiotics and a starchy diet), and my brother-in-law had done some research and suggested that candida might be my problem. Two weeks later, I started treatment for the candida infection.

After 6 weeks of treatment (a combination of diet and prescription anti-fungals, with some nutritional supplements and probiotics), I was 100% better. Before treatment, I’d have been lucky to be able to walk 1/2 mile without having to stop for rest. I had an unhealthy pallor – when I didn’t have hives – and was exhausted by sitting up for too long. A couple of weeks ago, I clocked my most recent walk: 4 miles. I CAN WALK FOUR MILES, NOW! That might not seem like a big deal to anyone else, but for me, it’s a huge victory.

Treatment for my infection officially ended in April, but I still follow the dietary and nutritional protocol Dr. McManus prescribed – I don’t want to get candida again! Unlike most modern doctors, Dr. McManus doesn’t just look at one part of your body – the digestive system, or the immune system – but at how all of those systems work together as a whole. She understands that anything you eat and drink is going to have an effect on the way ALL of your body’s systems perform because your body’s systems are intrinsically interconnected. Dr. McManus’s staff is incredibly helpful and caring – I had multiple email check-ups each week with my consulting nurse to monitor things like my hormone levels (which were erratic because of the trauma my body had undergone from the infection), my appetite, and my energy level. If something wasn’t improving – like my B12 levels and my energy – ZIP! out came a package of B12 drops I could take throughout the day to supplement my diet.

A side note: Dr. McManus doesn’t process insurance, but I was able to file with my insurance company and get some of the payments back. I was fortunate in that I had some student loans and some VERY generous and concerned parents who helped me out, because the treatment wasn’t cheap. It was totally worth it, though, as I’d spent more than the cost of treatment with Dr. McManus going to “traditional” doctors who kept telling me nothing was wrong with me.

A Single Step for a Healthier Holiday

As you prepare for the holiday season, find one thing that you can do to make it nutritionally healthier for you and your family and do it.  Here are some ideas:

  • Cut the top off of a small pumpkin and hollow it out.  Fill it with Roasted Red Bell Pepper or Sun dried Tomato Hummus and surround it with green bell pepper strips, cucumber dials, orange & yellow bell peppers and carrot sticks for a beautiful harvest hors d’ oeuvres tray.
  • Prepare your pumpkin pie crust using almond flour instead of wheat flour.
  • Replace your traditional bread stuffing with a quinoa and roasted winter squash dish.  Use the same savory spices of sage, oregano & rosemary.  Even include the oysters.
  • Surprise everyone with a healthier alternative to mashed potatoes using mashed cauliflower instead.
  • When preparing sweets, reduce the sugar by ¼ cup or replace it with a healthier option such as stevia, JustLikeSugar, or Erythritol.
  • Prepare less food so that there are not as many leftovers.
  • Save the turkey carcass and use it to make turkey vegetable soup for the freezer.
  • Order a free range, organic fresh turkey.
  • Make homemade cranberry relish to avoid the high fructose cranberry in canned.
  • Rather than green bean casserole, serve fresh green beans with melted butter, almond slivers and dill sprigs.
  • Insist that everyone you eat with go out for a walk or bike ride TOGETHER before or after dinner.
  • Give Thanks.

Vitamin D – Cancer Fighting Powerhouse

Top 10 Facts About Vitamin D and Cancer:

1.  Many studies have found solar ultraviolet-B (UVB) vitamin D associated with reduced risk of breast, colon, and rectal cancer.
2.  A randomized controlled trial with 1100 IU/day vitamin D3 plus 1450 mg/day calcium found a 77% reduction in all-cancer incidence.
3.  Geographical studies have found reduced risk in mortality rates for 15-20 types of cancer in regions of higher solar UVB doses.
4.  Observational studies found risk of breast, colon, and rectal cancer falls as vitamin D blood levels rise to over 40 ng/mL (100 nmol/L).
5.  Mechanisms have been proposed to explain how vitamin D acts to reduce the risk of cancer from starting, growing, and spreading.
6.  Those who develop non-melanoma skin cancer may have produced enough vitamin D to reduce their risk of internal cancers.
7.  Those with higher vitamin D blood levels at time of cancer diagnosis had nearly twice the survival rate of those with the lowest levels.
8.  African Americans have an increased risk of cancer in part due to lower vitamin D blood levels because of darker skin.
9.  Higher UVB exposure early in life has been associated with reduced risk of breast and prostate cancer.
10.  Those diagnosed with breast, colon, and prostate cancer in summer in Norway had higher survival rates than those diagnosed in winter.

Rethinking Cold and Flu Season

Factors That Affect Your Immune System

by Mila McManus MD

As cold and flu season approaches, I thought I would take a moment to give some tips on creating an effective and strong immune system. Often what makes for a “strong immune system” can be confusing and, when you consider that your immune system is your body’s natural defense against threats to your health, you may think more seriously about taking steps to strengthen it.  Let’s make your immune system so strong that it’s always ready to be in fighting mode when the risk for illness is at its highest.

A strong immune system is actually one that is optimized and resting until it is called to action and you can do your part to help yours stay that way by boosting supplements and also understanding several factors that can undermine it.

  • Hand Washing:  It is very important to remember that influenza and colds are not caused by bacteria, but yet rather a wide variety of viruses.  The most common way cold and flu viruses are spread is through hand to hand contact.  One of the easiest ways to lower your risk is to frequently wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Vitamin D:  While colds and flus are caused by viral infections, research shows that your body’s susceptibility to infection is related to, at least partially, an underlying vitamin D deficiency.
  • Probiotics:  The road to good health is paved with good intestines.  Probiotics can help you keep your immune system healthy by helping you ward off disease. Remember that 80% of your immune system lies in your gastrointestinal tract.  Good gut bacteria actually turn on disease fighting genes to help suppress those genes that can cause a plethora of health troubles.
  • Good Sleep:  If you are not getting adequate and restorative sleep, your body will be at risk for a hostile virile takeover.  Your immune system is at its best when you are most rested.  Also, the more rested you are, the quicker you are more likely to recover if you do catch a virus.

The Life Changing Loaf of Bread

This is a very nutrient dense gluten free bread, which provides high quality fat, protein and fiber, while keeping carbohydrates at a minimum. Delicious with butter, goat cheese, ham or honey. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
1 cup /sunflower or pumpkin seeds
½ cup /whole flax seeds
½ cup /hazelnuts or almonds
1 ½ cups /gluten free rolled oats
2 Tbsp. chia seeds
4 Tbsp. psyllium seed husks (3 Tbsp. if using psyllium husk powder)
1 tsp. fine grain sea salt (add ½ tsp. if using coarse salt)
1 Tbsp. maple syrup (for sugar-free diets, use a pinch of stevia)
3 Tbsp. melted coconut oil or ghee
1 ½ cups water

Directions:
In a flexible, silicone loaf pan combine all dry ingredients, stirring well. (Any loaf pan will also work, but please butter if using non-silicone). Whisk maple syrup, oil, and water together in a measuring cup. Add this to the dry ingredients and mix very well until everything is completely soaked and dough becomes very thick (if the dough is too thick to stir, add one or two teaspoons of water until the dough is manageable). Smooth out the top with the back of a spoon. Let sit out on the counter for at least 2 hours, or all day or overnight. To ensure the dough is ready, it should retain its shape even when you pull the sides of the loaf pan away from it.

2. Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C.

3. Place loaf pan in the oven on the middle rack, and bake for 20 minutes. Remove bread from loaf pan, place it upside down directly on the rack and bake for another 30-40 minutes. Bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped. Let cool completely before slicing (difficult, but important).

4. Store bread in a tightly sealed container for up to five days. Freezes well too. Slice before freezing for quick and easy toast!

N-Acetyl Cysteine

N-Acetyl Cysteine or “NAC” as it is commonly called, has been extensively researched for its antioxidant properties especially in its ability to neutralize the chemical by-products associated with environmental exposures.  Some of these exposures are the result of everyday contaminants in the items listed below:

  • Second hand smoke
  • Air fresheners, deodorizers, candles
  • Lawn pesticides (& chemical drift from pesticide applications)
  • Cleaning products
  • Gasoline & Kerosene fumes from power equipment
  • Chemicals produced from backyard burning
  • Building materials (carpet & paint)

NAC is easily converted to glutathione ( pronounced “gloota-thigh-own” ) which is the most important molecule you need to stay healthy and prevent aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia and more.  Glutathione is sometimes called the mother of all antioxidants and, coupled with its stability and long half life in the body, makes it a very economical and powerful antioxidant.

Why do 1 in 10 kids in the US have ADHD?

How cutting out certain food Additives could curb ADHD (and cancer too).

Cases of allergies, asthma, ADHD & Autism are surging among  U.S. children.  A U.S. Government survey claims that 1 in 10 U.S. children now have ADHD.  This is a dramatic increase from several years earlier.  ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) makes it difficult for children to control impulsive behavior and pay attention.  Approximately 2/3 of the children diagnosed with ADHD are on some form of prescription medication.

Scientists are exploring whether these conditions are related to exposure to toxic chemicals that are common in most of the processed food that fills our supermarkets, homes & school cafeterias.

We all know that Junk food is bad, but when money and time are tight, fast, readily available processed food is often the cheapest way to put calories into your kid’s belly.  These fast foods are often riddled with unhealthy ingredients that experts think may contribute to, and worsen, ADHD.  The most common are:

  • Sodium Benzoate, a preservative (e.g., found in soda)
  • Blue #1 and #2 food coloring
  • Green #3
  • Orange B
  • Red #3 and #40
  • Yellow #5 & #6

If your child has ADHD-like symptoms, first be sure your child has been given an age appropriate assessment to rule out that his or her “acting out” is actually normal.  Then implement the following strategies as they often work exceptionally well in treating this condition.

  • Eliminate most grains and sugars from your child’s diet.  Even organic and whole grain can cause problems.  Give him/her a “grain holiday” and see if behavior improves.
  • Replace soft drinks (whether diet or regular), fruit juices, and pasteurized milk with pure, clean non fluoridated water.  While you may believe fruit juices are a healthy alternative to soda, they really aren’t and need to be avoided.
  • Avoid all processed foods, especially those containing artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.
  • Minimize the use of nearly all processed fats, especially trans- fat as they disrupt nerve cell intercommunication.
  • Clear your house of dangerous pesticides. Pesticides are not chemicals to preserve life. To the contrary they are created and used to end it by killing bugs and weeds.  Pesticide exposure has been linked to ADHD.
  • Avoid commercial grade washing detergents and cleaning products and replace them with naturally derived cleaning products with no added dyes, perfumes, softeners.
  • Increase omega 3 fats by taking a high quality animal based omega-3 oil.  Krill oil is the best for this as it is more easily absorbed.
